Zellige manufacturing step : The art of zellige developed in Morocco from the 10th century. The stages of manufacture of this artisanal technique: Step 1: Clay preparation : The finesse & robustness of the Zellige de Fez lies in the particularity of the clay used. Fez clay is a white clay renowned for its solidity. It is not refined & has porous properties that give it technological quality. How is clay worked? The clay blocks are crushed & moistened in water basins dug into the yard of the workshop. Clay is mixed with water, kneaded & spread to dry in the sun. The clay is calibrated & then squared. Step 2: Baking natural zelliges A first cooking is carried out in an oven fed with palm leaves, oleander branches & white thistles. The tiles are cooked at a temperature of 1000oC. Natural zelliges are obtained at the end of this cooking. Step 3: Enamelling zelliges A mixture composed of tin oxide is used to coat one side of the terracotta tiles. This mixture makes the glaze of a glazed earth opaque. To obtain a white enamel, the parts are coated with calcin (khfîf) & siliceous sand. Smalt powder (brâya, ) gives the pieces deep blue hues. Manganese makes it possible to obtain colors ranging from brown to black through purplish tones. Limonite offers bright yellow tones. Step 4: Cooking enamel-covered zelliges The second cooking concerns zelliges that have been covered with enamel: they are cooked at 800oC . The intensity of the heat & the place of the zelliges in the oven creates variations in shades of the same color on each zellige. From this traditional manufacturing process, zellige units emanate whose proportions are around 11 X 11cm. The zellige craftsman uses these zellige units as a raw material to cut traditional zellige tiles 10 x 10 cm or zellige tesserae with more extravagant shapes such as scales, hexagons or vine leaves. Each glazed leather tile is cut by hand & the shapes can be of astonishing complexity. The accuracy of the gesture of Kassar or Mâalem is amazing. He uses a sharp hammer that is called " Manqach ". Following the first cut, the craftsman will bevel the tesserae, chamfer them to reveal regular edges & a thin stripped
