A Qing Dynasty carved stone architectural temple figure, in the form of a foo dog guardian lion. Created in China in the 18th/19th century, the antique solid stone sculpture featured seated with one paw on ball, rising on square plinth pedestal base, showcasing an impressive attitude, expressed by its tiled head, open mouth & kinetic pose, & well carved mane with whirls. Rare with stone carvings this work features impressive open work around legs & ornate, richly detailed pedestal stand with incised decoration, reminding us of its worldly, celestial aspect & enhancing the dynamism of the statue. Stone guardians such as this magnificent example were used as building ornaments, & adorned the exterior courtyard of a traditional Buddhist temple. This rare form Chinese stone guardian lion will make for an impressive & uncommon decorative item in most homes or gardens, especially placed next to the entry or doorway to welcome guests while protecting the residence.
