"The Fall of Reynolds" by Alfred Rudolph Waud is a dramatic Civil War illustration depicting the moment Union General John F. Reynolds was struck and killed during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Waud, one of the few artists present at the battle, captured the chaos and gravity of the scene as Reynolds falls backward from his horse, his hat flying off, surrounded by startled soldiers. Originally drawn in the field, the image was later published as an engraving in Harper's Weekly, conveying both the shock of the general's sudden death and its significance to the Union cause.
