A unique & really decorative antique object. Great craftsmanship. Made in Japan during the Meiji period (around the turn of the century 1900). The whole surface (except for the bottom & the inside) is decorated with a traditional relief pattern, even the handles & feet. On the sides, there are depictions of the mythical creatures Qilin & Phoenix among the clouds (they are very beautiful but extremely hard to catch in a picture). On top of the lid, there is a figure of a street musician playing the cymbals. This incense burner is different from the ones with holes: the lid would be removed, the bowl filled with sand in which incense sticks would be put. Circa 30 cm tall, 18 cm wide, 15 cm long. Weight 2.3 kg. Nice antique condition. Some patina on the bronze, a bit of wear on the musician's head - he was probably stroked too often :) One foot feels a bit loose, but only slightly, & the censer is still stable.
