These rollers are one of my best finds I am so excited as these are amazing This is an antique roller which was used in the printing of wallpaper!. It came from a mill in New Jersey in the mid 60's & now has been found in the Midwest. These were used from the late 1800's to early 1900's. These rollers are simple bands of brass but the unique part is the wood roller has been painted in a lovely, bright & what I assume is the original color. Choose either bright yellow & a peachy pink. I love these grouped together! Each measures 21 1/2" tall x approximately 4 3/4" diameter. It weighs almost 10 pounds. This is what I learned...Each is unique & conditions, variations & some striations are to be expected. Ornate patterns & designs are sketched on some of the rollers. Often the wood or the stamp material has a gorgeous aged patina coloring. The standard wallpaper-printer roller had a wooden core of old forest maple, mahogany or cypress. They can be sealed with satin finish to highlight & protect the wood. You can paint them too! A brief history: During the 1840s, industrialization transformed the business of making wallpaper in America with the arrival of cylinder printing machines & continuous-feed paper. Each roll has a pattern number & would have been responsible for printing a single color of a patterned design. The paper moved around a giant drum & passed beneath a series of printing rollers. Each roller added detail in as many as twelve different colors as they rotated through individual ink troughs. A staff of artisans was hired to design & create patterns by milling & or tapping strips of brass into that core. Next, walls of felt were tightly packed into the brass outlines to carry the colors.
