Please Read Item Description Thoroughly Measurements Include Below This is an exceptionally rare & important dress from the late 1910s, designed by the renowned Eleanor O'Donovanan influential American designer whose work is featured in major museums, including The Met. (I've included a link for those interested in learning more about her.) The dress is crafted from luxurious mauve silk velvet, paired with matching chiffon for the bust & sleeves. It features a high chiffon neckline & a sailor-style velvet collar that drapes beautifully across the back. The bodice is a vision of elegance, with a chiffon front panel layered over metallic lace & lined in taupe silk. Intricate embroidery adorns the bib front, worked in metallic gold, silver, & copper threads, along with silvery-gray silk floss for depth & texture. The sleeves are another highlightsheer chiffon with dramatic keyhole openings running the full length & trimmed in silver bugle beads. Delicate swags at the top secure the openings, while ¾-length undersleeves in a soft pink tone peek through for contrast. At the waist, an attached sash belt falls gracefully, while the straight skirt extends to mid-calf, framed by two embroidered side panels with cascading silver bead details. The back is especially striking, featuring a fluid, cape-like overlay from shoulders to hem, richly embroidered & beaded for a sense of movement & grandeur. The dress closes along the front left side with a series of snaps & hooks, & the interior is fully lined in taupe silk. A waistband inside bears the original "O'Donovan New York" label. The quality of construction is exceptional, with extensive hand finishing & even hidden dress weights to ensure the skirt hangs perfectly. Condition: Overall, the dress is in remarkable condition for its age. A few minor flaws include: Some staining on the top chiffon layer (most noticeable at close inspection). A few small holes on the right sleeve, mostly on the back & inner arm. Faint staining on the inner lining of the skirt, which does not show through the velvet & has not compromised the fabric. The dress remains strong, odor-free, & wearable with care. Sizing Notes: Measurements are provided below. Please note that the waistline placement may vary depending on the wearer's torso length, as the silhouette sits between late-1910s natural waist & early-1920s drop waist styles.
