I was searching through my bookshelf for something to read one day when I came upon an ancient manuscript that had been sitting there for I don’t know how long. The stories had gone unread, but I’d been told that this three-thousand-year-old tale held much excitement and many interesting truths. I wondered why I hadn’t taken a keener interest in the narrative long before, given its pedigree? “Anything that has survived thousands of years must be a good story, right,” I said to myself? So I blew the dust off the cover and heard the binding pop as I slowly opened the good book. The first thing I noticed was that it was a translation from an ancient language, and the one I possessed turned out to be a rather awkward one. However, as I studied it, a most interesting story emerged. This intriguing story had been hiding under a lot of difficult names; a ton of strange place markers which were clearly not part of the original manuscript; and what can only be described as choppy copy. I set about to gently coax the story line out of the confusion. The challenge was to stay true to the narrative’s original content. I even tried to find out the original author’s name. Not an easy task, given the manuscript’s age. Those people familiar with the story said it is most likely a prophet by the name of Zabud. Thus Zabud gets the credit as author of a book known by another name: 1 Samuel. It is the old, old story for the 21st century reader. Easy to read and comprehend, and a nice flow of ideas. Some parts of the story will be familiar, even to the 21st century reader. Other parts, however, will be enjoyed for the first time. The story starts with a woman’s heartfelt devotion in the face of pain and ridicule. That is the launching point into an intricate plot involving corrupt priests and true prophets; battling armies; finding kings and losing kings; the Ark of the Covenant (front cover); plagues; contests between deities and idols, golden hemorrhoids (?!); men and giants; madmen; narrow escapes; the love of brotherhood; people called up from the dead; and the list goes on. All topped off with a familiar king-to-be finding his own way in life. So, find a comfortable chair, cozy in and enjoy an old, old story that remains forever new.
