Unique illustrated rarity with immaculate gothic imagery by E. L. Blumenschein. Apparently, the only edition ever published of this gem. Stated at title page: "The Centenary Edition, MCMIX; Copyright, 1908 by Duffield & Company." Large 7 1/2" x 9 3/4" design. Original maroon cloth boards, gilt cover and spine titles, some shelf wear, rub, discoloration. Apprx. 1/2" x 4" missing spine material. Cover features subtly colored, mounted plate from "The Pit and the Pendulum" surrounded by gilt border of struggling individual clutching at his head as he stares off to infinity with alien creatures in b.g. This art is produced in full on interior plate. Heavy stock deckled pages, good with attractive toning; some fox at endpapers. Gilded top edge. Bind good, square; hinges intact. Near good rare issue of this illustrated edition. Features seven haunting tales accompanied by seven darkly macabre color plates by Ernest L. Blumenschein. Known for his western and New Mexico art, this particular set of imagery is uniquely intriguing and somehow rather undiscovered in his portfolio of work. Poe's tales include: "The Fall of the House of Usher; The Masque of the Red Death; The Pit and the Pendulum; The Black Cat; The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar; The Gold-Bug; and, The Murders in the Rue Morgue". 219 pages. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
