First edition. Hake supplements Gordon's journals with an introduction, notes, and a facsimile of his hand-drawn map of the area around Suzhou. During the Taiping rebellion Gordon took command of the Ever Victorious Army and "defeated [the rebellion] by the mobility of his forces, particularly the swift and flexible manoeuvring of armed steamboats. This unorthodox warfare, combined with the ascendancy which Gordon established over his men, enabled him to crush the rebellion in eighteen months" (ODNB). In the aftermath he was lauded for his leadership in Britain and China, the emperor of which bestowed upon him the highest rank in their military. Hake (1849-1916) was a relation of Gordon's and wrote his biography, The Story of Chinese Gordon (1884). Cordier p. 651. Octavo. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of General Gordon, half-tone photographic plate, hand-coloured folding map at rear; tables in text. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board lettered in gilt with Gordon's name in Chinese characters, black endpapers, edges untrimmed. Bookseller's ticket of Henri Paul on front free endpaper verso. Binding rather worn and soiled, some repairs, front joint split at foot, ink splotches on pp. 482-83, folding map repaired with tape: a good copy.
