Handsomely-bound copy of this 19th century printing. Fully titled: "The Origin Of Species By Means Of Natural Selection, Or The Preservation Of Favoured Races In The Struggle For Life". Forty-Ninth Thousand [John Murray, London, 1897]; xxii, 432, [2 blank] pages; full calf binding, 5 raised bands, school crest [Framlingham College] on front within ornate gold border, gold titling & decorations to spine, marbled endpapers & page block, bumped & rubbed along edges, most notably at spine edges, school prize inside front board, an excellent copy. Later printing of the Sixth Edition - the last to accommodate Darwin's own changes. With foldout diagram at pp84 in excellent condition. Awarded to A.O. Wintle* for his Senior Certificate [Dec 1897] & with addressed envelope c/- The Parsonage, Snetterton loosely inserted. *Reverend Algernon Ogle Wintle [1881 - 1959] served as Rector of Lawshall & was later canonised. He set up a factory in Lavenham to overhaul pianos & was renowned as an authority on the Barrel-Organ [this tidbit of interest places him in the more practical arm of the clergy, ie those who perhaps recognise science over creationism]
