Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy's novel about a scandalous affair between a married Russian socialite and a cavalry officer, first appeared in English in 1886. Readers ever since have been enamored with Tolstoy's exploration of love, and desire, social expectations and personal consequences, with American writer William Faulkner dubbing it the best novel ever written. Nathan Haskell Dole translated the novel out of the original Russian, and Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. printed this first English language edition prior to the release of the first British edition. This copy includes all eight parts in one complete volume. Handwritten ownership inscriptions of Susie R. Doolittle, Christmas 1889; S.L Sickles, August, '72 from Roxy on front flyleaf and pastedown. Octavo (8vo), single volume. Very Good; blue cloth cover remains secure, with minor edgewear and fraying at edges of the spine and corners, while internally the floral endpapers are somewhat age-toned, and the pages are clean and bound in a tight and secure text block. Collation: [2], viii, 5-773, [5]. First English Edition, early printing. #31191. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
