Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy's novel about a scandalous affair between a married Russian socialite and a cavalry officer, first appeared in English in 1886. Readers ever since have been enamored with Tolstoy's exploration of love, and desire, social expectations and personal consequences, with American writer William Faulkner dubbing it the best novel ever written. Nathan Haskell Dole translated the novel out of the original Russian, and Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. printed this first English language edition prior to the release of the first British edition.
