First edition of Matisse s final artist s book project, featuring an original lithograph frontispiece by Matisse, printed by Mourlot Frères, and ninety-three reproductions of portraits, including sixty in black and white and thirty-three in color. The publication was conceived and designed under Matisse s supervision and reflects his lifelong fascination with the art of portraiture. Printed on vélin d Arches paper, this edition was limited to 2,850 numbered copies. The volume retains its original lithographic wrappers designed by Matisse. Loose as issued, wraps with glassine jacket, hard chemise.
