A cornerstone of early modern anatomy, Historia Musculorum Hominis (1734) presents Bernhard Siegfried Albinusâ s systematic study of the muscles of the human body, illustrated with some of the most refined copperplate engravings of the eighteenth century. A professor of anatomy and surgery at Leiden and successor to Hermann Boerhaave, Albinus combined meticulous dissection with a mathematical precision that profoundly influenced anatomical representation. The volumeâ s engraved plates depict the musculature in exquisite detailâ "showing both artistic sensitivity and empirical clarityâ "and are accompanied by full Latin descriptions identifying every ligament, tendon, and muscle fiber. His work refined the visual vocabulary of human anatomy and shaped the standards for all later anatomical atlases of the Enlightenment. This 1734 Leiden printing by Theodorus Haak and Henricus Mulhovius represents the first and only separate edition of the Historia Musculorum Hominis before Albinus expanded his research into the larger Tabulae Sceleti et Musculorum Corporis Humani (1747). The text is printed in double columns with typographic ornaments and large historiated initials, and the plates are engraved with remarkable crispness. The volume includes detailed legends and explanatory text corresponding to each plate. Albinusâ s study stands as one of the great scientific-artistic collaborations in medical history, often associated with his later partnership with the artist Jan Wandelaar. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in its original 18th-century vellum-backed marbled boards, the spine titled in manuscript (â B. S. Albini / Historia Musculorum Hominisâ ). The vellum is sound though age-toned, with typical darkening and light soiling. Boards retain traces of early marbling, now worn and faded, showing surface abrasion and some rounding to corners. Binding tight and unrestored. The text is complete and uncut, retaining wide margins and deckled edges throughout. Interior generally clean and crisp, with light scattered foxing and occasional marginal toning; plates bright and strongly impressed. Manuscript note on front flyleaf in an early 19th-century hand describing Albinus and the workâ s contents. Overall- fair.
