A two volume set of the fourth edition of Burke's genealogical and heraldic dictionary of the British (including Ireland) Landed Gentry. Complete in two volumes. Fourth edition. First issued as a companion volume to Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom, this work provides a detailed reference list of the families in Great Britain and Ireland who have owned rural estates of some size. As well as listing genealogical information, details of the right of a given family to a coat of arms are included where applicable. This and Burke's other annual genealogical works were considered comparable to the Almanach de Gotha in continental Europe. Families are arranged in alphabetical order by surname, with each family article headed with the surname and the name of their landed property. With commentary on the owner of the property and all children, and male-line descendants often also listed. The work provides full names and details of birth, marriage, and death, as well as additional factors of social prestige such as education, military rank and regiment, Church of England cures, or other honours. Written by Sir John Bernard Burke, a notable British genealogist and Ulster King of Arms, who helped publish Burke's Peerage. Rebacked with quarter leather and cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spines with the odd small mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with minor age toning to the extremities. A contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Very Good
