First edition of the first American book on bookbinding. Nicholson (1820-1901) was proprietor and founder of the Philadelphia bindery Pawson & Nicholson, in operation from 1848-1911. He had previously apprenticed with Weaver and Warnock. The section on marbling is a reprint of Charles Woolnough's 1853 work on marbling.
