First edition, scarce in the jacket designed by John Piper. The novel concerns class the owners and staff of an Irish country house during the Second World War. An adaptation for television was produced by the BBC in 1996, starring Mark Rylance and Georgina Cates. Green's "three novels Caught (1943), Loving (1945), and Back (1946) deal with different aspects of life on the home front; with the blitz, evacuation, and demobilization, respectively. All three books register shocks to the psychological and social systems, but in Loving in particular the sense of foreboding is offset by passages of brilliant and enlivening prose, frequently of an erotic character" (ODNB). Woolmer 519. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket Two ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper: "Arthur Phelps, 1945", probably the Canadian poet and academic (1887-1970) and "John Metcalf". Spine slightly cocked, extremities a touch bumped and rubbed; jacket unclipped, spine slightly toned with shallow loss at ends and small puncture to centre, occasional tiny nicks and chips to edges, 9 mm closed tear to front panel: a very good copy in like jacket.
