Set of 14 uncut maps on 2 sheets, 23 x 31" each. Color lithography, New York: Robert H. Dodd, 1915. Rare set of Manhattan maps showing the original land grants and farms. Small inset of Dutch grants lower right. Possibly test run or prototype for Stokes seminal work on the history of New York. Some toning, manuscript notes and surface dirt but otherwise in good condition. The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909 is a seminal book by Stokes that is the "most elaborate and comprehensive history of New York City." Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) was an American architect. He was a pioneer in social housing who co-authored the 1901 New York tenement house law.
