Elegie d'Ihpetonga. Suivie de Masques de Cendre. Editions Hemispheres, Paris 1949. Yvan Goll (poet), Pablo Picasso (Illustrator). With four original lithographs by Picasso. One of 180 numbered copies in Velin de Rives(N. 192), out of a total edition of 220. French edition. Elegy of Ihpetonga is dedicated to Picasso and reflects Goll s experience in New York. A comment preceding the poem explains its title: Ihpetonga, which signifies high cliff, was the name that the Canarsie Indians gave to that part of Brooklyn which today is known as Columbia Heightsand which dominate the port of New York. There this poem was conceived. For this book Picasso made four wash drawings, dated April 11, 1949, on lithographic paper, printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris.
