Signed on the front free endpaper by Abbey. One of the classics of American environmental writing, Abbey writes of his time as a ranger at Arches National Monument and of its desert geology and wildlife, takes a last float trip through Glen Canyon, bemoans and sabotages road development, and in general goes straight to the heart of things, to bedrock. With illustrations by Peter Parnall. Perhaps a good copy only on account of some staining to the first page of the "Author's Introduction" only (see photo), but otherwise very good with some edge wear, light bumping to spine, rubbing to the title on the spine, and a few minor scratches to cloth. In a very good jacket with edge wear and some creasing/short tears to the spine crown and its vicinity, another one-inch tear to top edge of the rear panel, and a scuff at mid-spine. The cover illustration is so iconic and elemental the jacket wear basically adds to its atmosphere.
