A very scarce true first edition of this very rare 18th Century Catalogue - the title translates as 'Description of the Paintings and Pieces of Sculpture contained in the Gallery of His Highness Franz Joseph Head and Reigning Prince of the House of Liechtenstein'. ***Very good in an original contemporary blue cloth-covered binding. The boards show some rubbing and fading commensurate with age and handling over the past 245 years, but have no damage. Spine rubbed. Corners and edges rubbed. Top and tail of spine have surface wear but no loss to the cloth. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally the book is very clean with no foxing. The paper is good quality hand-made paper, with just some wrinkling and marks with age but generally very clean throughout. No serious creases or tears. No inscriptions. Please note that the front free endpaper and attached blank leaf have detached but are otherwise undamaged. The title page is completely clean and also undamaged. He distinguished himself as director of the Liechtenstein Gallery. He painted animals, historical subjects, and large altar-pieces, most of which are in Russia and Poland.' (Wiki) ***'Johann Dallinger von Dalling the Elder (13 August 1741 Vienna - 8 January 1806) painter. He studied with his father Franz Theodor and in Bregenz, then (after travels through Germany and Switzerland) at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Around 1771 he became director of the Liechtenstein Gallery in Vienna (writing a catalogue in 1805). He copied paintings from the gallery and painted altarpieces.' (Vienna History Wiki) ***'Johann Thomas Trattner (20 December 1719 in Jormannsdorf, Kingdom of Hungary - 31 July 1798 in Vienna) was an Austrian court printer, bookseller and publisher, imperial knight, nobleman of the Kingdom of Hungary, lord of the lordship of Ebergassing and Lower Austrian farmer. Through the intercession of Gerard van Swieten, the personal physician of Empress Maria Theresa, Trattner was appointed court book printer by her in 1752. He took up this position in the same year as the successor to his mentor Ghelen, with the privilege of being able to produce all the textbooks and textbooks required in Austria. To this end, Trattner set up a large company in the Viennese suburb of Lerchenfeld.'
