First edition. This annotated work is the first translation into English of a 17th-century collection compiled by the scholar Muhammad Diyab al-Itlidi. Frere (1842-1926) became proficient in Arabic while living in Cairo. Before her residence in Egypt, she undertook a two-year world tour from Bombay to England. Original brown cloth over bevelled boards, spine and boards lettered and decorated in black and gilt, green coated endpapers, edges green and sprinkled black, binders's ticket (Burn & Co.) on rear pastedown. Cloth generally clean, spine ends and tips bumped and worn, text block a little shaken: very good.
