The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe Being the Second and Last Part of His Life and Being of the Strange and Surprising ACCOUNTS of his TRAVELS Round Three Parts of the Globe. Written by Himself (i.e. written by Daniel Defoe) Dublin: Printed for Patrick Dugan Bookseller on Cork-Hill, 1719. Appears to be an extremely scarce first edition printed in Ireland of the Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, the sequel to the Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, but complete in and of itself, and possibly the first appearance of Robinson Crusoe in Ireland. I could find NO copies of this edition on Worldcat.org, although a few other titles printed for Patrick Dugan are extant but of other subjects and authors. Patrick Dugan published a parody of Robinson Crusoe called The Life and strange surprizing adventures of Mr. D- de F- of London, Hosier. in a Dialogue between him, Robinson Crusoe and his Man Friday. So far as I can tell, this book was NOT written by Defoe; the attributed author is Charles Gildon. As of this writing, one copy is available for $4000. Six years ago, a copy of the parody with three other titles was listed in the Bernard Quaritch catalogue, Midwinter, 2018, with an asking price of £12500, about $19,000 in 2024 money. Size, Binding: Small octavo or 12mo, measuring 6 1/2 x 4" (16 1/2 x 10 x 2.5 cm). Leather boards appear contemporary with faint tooling of a Cambridge-like style binding with repair to the spine, probably circa 1900. Wear to corners, as typical. The end-papers and the all the leaves/pages are original to the book as printed. The binding is holding the book very solidly. Collation: Blank end-paper leaf, title page (i), The Preface (iii-iv), The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe Main Text (1-278) with Finis on the last printed leaf; two blank leaves at the end, the last as an end-paper. Complete. Condition: Overall a very good example of what appears to be a monstrously scarce book. Most of the pages have some toning but NO foxing. Fraying to the title page, but no major tearing or chips to any of the pages that I can see. There is a former owner signature on the title page, the name on either side of "OF" part of the title. NOTE: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The picture are NOT stock photos.) IMPORTANT NOTE: All sales are generally FINAL. I do NOT accept returns because of buyer's remorse, "it was a gift but the recipient already had it", or "I found the same book(s) at a better price". I am not selling new items to compete with other retailers. Returns are only accepted because of significant discrepancies regarding edition and/or condition of which I try to be very thorough in researching the edition/printing as well as describing ALL condition issues. So make sure you're 100% positive you desire one of my items before making a purchase.
