A very handsome first edition, two volumes in full leather and custom decorated, three part, slipcase, of this monumental work. With the three plates called for - the engraved frontispiece portrait of Johnson by Heath after Reynolds, The Round Robin at p. 92, and the facsimilesÓ of Dr. Johnson's handwriting on p. 588. This copy appears to be an early issue, though not a first issue, with numerous additional first issue points, including the following points: Volume One Ð P.48, line 8 from bottom: "upon" repeatedP.115, line 8 from bottom: "reollection" P.117, line 2 from bottom: "exhihited" P.275, line 2 from bottom: "condescente" P.291, line 9 from bottom: "Harvey" PP. 271-4: both Mm and Nn are cancels.Volume Two - pages 229, 408, 497, 504, 555, 585 and 586 are mis-numbered and uncorrected. P.78, line 23: "painted", later correction to "printed" P.92, line 6: "MDCCLXXXIV" vs. "MDCCLXXIV" P.352, line 11: "us" omitted before "enquireP.562, line 3 from bottom: "mother tongue - (not hyphenated) Boards appear to be contemporary; spine re-cased with more recent complementary leather. Boards are especially handsome with figuring and gilt decorations to edges. Binding is tight and square. Leather is in very good plus condition. With the bookplate, on front board, of Virginia book collector Christopher Clark Geest. Pages are in very good condition with light toning or spots to a few initial pages, final pages and in some margins. Most pages are quite clean. Housed in an impressive custom slipcase with rounded, half-leather spine, elaborately gilt decorated, and with wrap-around covers for each volume.
