Bound volume containing six issues of New England Magazine, featuring the first appearance of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's iconic feminist short story "The Yellow Wall Paper" in the January 1892 issue. Precedes the first trade edition by seven years. ix-xiv, 555-824, 548 pp., text printed in double columns; story pp. 647 - 565. Bound in late 19th-century dark brown cloth over half morocco lettered in gilt on the spine, all edges speckled red. Incorrect title page and index bound in at front; this volume covers January - June 1892, as the binding correctly states, and not September 1891 - February 1892. Very Good with moderate rubbing to covers, joints starting at lower ends, and hinges starting. Light soiling and dampstaining to endpapers. Light toning to contents, scattered foxing to textblock edges occasionally impinging on margins within, and several tears to pages. The first appearance of the story of a woman driven to madness by doctor-prescribed confinement, with three illustrations by Joseph Henry Hatfield. Gilman herself had been prescribed the "rest cure" but abandoned it after three months, and she imagined that insanity would be the inevitable result of refraining from all social activities and physical and mental labor. She sent a copy of "The Yellow Wallpaper" to her physician. He did not reply, but the story's publication sparked a debate over the treatment of women's mental illnesses. Other items of feminist interest include the March 1892 article "Recollections of Lousia May Alcott" by the late writer's friend Maria S. Porter, and the April 1892 article "Women's Work at the Harvard Observatory."
