'What is the use of wisdom if one says goodbye to the world just when one has achieved it?' A fine three-page autograph letter signed (one folded page) by Edvard Grieg, Copenhagen, 1st May 1898. He writes in German in bold fountain pen ink, opening, 'Dear William, You certainly know how to sustain your joy in the correct position That's very talented of you, but still misguided. We would really like to know when your wedding is. You don't ask a lovelorn fortune teller for letters, just four words on your postcard. So, please, please!' He goes on, 'The Bergen Music Festival is driving me crazy. I've been to several around the world, but I've never experienced one where people can be so nasty and jealous. You live and learn, as the saying goes, and eventually you become very wise. But what is the use of wisdom if one says goodbye to the world just when one has achieved it? Now I'm philosophising like a 54-year old. Don't worry about all this! You have other and better things to do!' Grieg ends by sending his best wishes to his correspondent's family. In very fine condition. A charming letter. In 1898, Edvard Grieg played a central role in founding the first Bergen Music Festival, aiming to promote Norwegian music and culture in his hometown. As a co-founder and artistic director, he was deeply involved in organizing the event, selecting repertoire and conducting performances, including his own compositions. Grieg's leadership and vision helped establish the festival as a significant cultural institution, showcasing both national and international talent and laying the groundwork for future celebrations of Norwegian artistic achievement.
