2 volumes 8vo (23,6 x 25,2 cm), one in photographic wrappers, the other in black wrappers, modern chemise and slipcase. First edition published on the occasion of the 10th Tokyo Biennale (10 May-16 August 1970). The event marked the beginning of a transitional period of time during which Japanese visual arts were freeing themselves from Western influence that had been present since the post-war period. Entitled "Between Man and Matter", the exhibition opens at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Gallery (10-30 May), then moves to the Kyoto Municipal Art Museum (6-28 June), at the Aichi Prefectural Art Gallery (15-26 July) and ends at the Fukuoka Prefectural Culture House (11-16 August). Essay by the art critic Yusuke Nakahara, who also curated the exhibition featuring 40 international artists from the Conceptual Art, the Arte Povera, the Minimal Art and the Mono-ha. Reproductions of works by Daniel Buren, Christo, Sol Lewitt, Guiseppe Penone, Panamarenko, Jannnis Kounellis, Richard Serra, Edward Krasinski, Mario Merz, On Kawara, Bruce Nauman, Katsuhiko Narita, Yutaka Matsuzawa, Susumu Koshimizu, Jiro Takamatsu, Kenji Inumaki and Michio Horikawa among others.
