Frederick was the son of Henry Vernon and his second wife, Margaret Fisher. In an unlikely series of twists and turns, he inherited Wentworth Castle, Yorkshire, and other property from his great-grandfather the Earl of Strafford, as long as he added the surname Wentworth. "The Arms of Wentworth-Vernon Quarterly, that is to say First and Fourth Wentworth viz.Sable a chevron between three leopards faces Or (a crescent for difference). Second Vernon of Sudbury viz. Argent a Fret Sable (a crescent for difference) third Vernon of Haslington viz. Or on a fess Azure three Garbs of the field. Crest of Wentworth viz. On a wreath of the colours a griphon passant wings elevated Argent (a crescent for difference)." The vellum indenture is housed in a brown leather and gilt tooled case with two seals, the case, 48.5cm wide and carefully restored, with two metal skippets, one detached and wax seal missing. The indenture measures 45.5cm x 39.5cm .
