First edition, signed by the author on the title page and by George Band, the youngest member of the team, on the dedication page. This work is accompanied by a small collection of material centred on the 1953 Everest Expedition, during which Hillary and Norgay became the first to reach the summit. John Hunt (1910-1998) was the leader of the expedition and composed his autobiography "in an astonishing thirty days" (ODNB). A first edition of the abbreviated pictorial version, Our Everest Adventure, accompanies this work. The collection also includes notes from the post-expedition lecture tour of 1953 and The Times Everest Colour Supplement. Both feature photographs of the expedition and advertisements of products used on the mountain, including Kodak colour film and flavoured Simpkins glucose tablets. "The Times special correspondent", who wrote the supplement, is presumably Jan Morris, who was the only reporter travelling with the expedition and who delivered the news that the men had reached the summit. Neate H135; Neate 395; Yakushi H269a. Meena Khorana, The Indian Subcontinent in Literature, 1991. 4 works, various sizes. The Ascent of Everest with colour frontispiece and 7 other colour plates, 48 half-tone plates, sketches, maps and plans to the text; Ascent of Everest 1953 Lecture Notes with illustrations and advertisements to text; The Times Everest Colour Supplement with illustrations and advertisements to text; Our Everest Adventure with illustrations to text.
