Presentation copy with 'Compliments of Arthur W. Dow 1906' on cover sheet. Quarto: Six 10" x 8" black and white images printed by hand on Japanese paper from metal relief blocks on a small printing press in his Ipswich studio and accompanied by title sheet printed in orange and set loose in paper folder. Included are 'Chrysanthemum,' 'Fish,' 'Poppy,' 'Iris,' 'Lily' and 'Raven'. With Introduction. 1" marginal closed tear to cover sheet; previous owner's name at the top left and lightly inked on the back of each print. Rare; only one institutional holding located. Dow was an influential arteducator; he taught many of America's leading artists and craftspeople, including: Georgia O'Keeffe; California educator and printmaker Pedro Joseph de Lemos adapted and widely disseminated Dow's theories in dozens of theoretical and instructional publications (1918 1950) for art schools. Early in his career, the young Frank Lloyd Wright was influenced by Dow.(wiki). The 'Ipswich Prints' were a series of small publications intended by Dow as educational tools to supplement his 'Composition.' Each included metal relief prints that were either compositions by Dow or ornamental designs that illustrated his theories of art.
