The first American edition has two states. The earlier, and preferred state, has Macmillan at the bottom of the spine (of the book, not the wrapper) and below Macmillan is a single dot. The second state has Macmillan at the bottom and below that is a dash-dot-dash.This is the first book of Lewis' cosmic trilogy. Blue cloth boards with yellow text on the spine. 174 pp. The dust wrapper has a purple background with a narrow band of blue at the top and bottom. There is a bit of space art and text in white and blue.The book is very nearly fine with no writing, no foxing, and a tight binding. Faint shelf wear on the bottom edge. The dust wrapper is VG with much edge wear and a professionally repaired closed tear. As in most copies, the spine of the wrapper is quite faded.
