4to (152 x 207 mm). (16) pp. With woodcut vignette showing the Madonna and child within an oval decorated border on title-page, the whole in a border of cast fleurons; one full-page woodcut of St Catherine of Alexandria on verso, and a woodcut initial of a horse and rider. Early 20th-century Portuguese plain paper wrappers. Stored in modern half calf folding case with two leather ribbons. First and only edition. One of the earliest printed accounts of Mediterranean slave revolts, prepared in Catalan by the Dominican friar and rector of the University of Perpignan, Miquel Llot de Ribera (1555-1607). A fine example of the popular "relaciones de sucesos" - ephemeral reports that served to disseminate current political and religious events in late Renaissance Spain. Spanning from 11 June to 4 December 1590, this scarce pamphlet discusses the preparation for and liberation of 420 Christian captives from two Ottoman galleys and the killing of 300 Ottomans within the course of a few hours, naming military leaders on both sides, with references to Constantinople and Tripoli. Written in the immediate aftermath of the event, the narrative reflects both the triumphalist perspective of Spanish Christendom and the wider context of the Ottoman-Habsburg conflict in the 16th century. - Perpignan, ancient capital of the Kingdom of Majorca, had been been under control of Aragon until the dynastic marriage of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castille united the crowns of Aragon and Castile to form modern Spain in 1469. The present work was published in Perpignan 70 years before Spain ceded it to France. - Rare, OCLC locates a single physical copy at Barcelona University. - Second and third page marginally spotted, otherwise in fine condition. - Old shelfmark to front wrappers; manuscript foliation throughout (f. 116-123, suggesting the work was bound with other material at some point). - Palau 145.465. Wilkinson, Iberian Books 11386. Comas/Miralles, La impremta a Perpinyà: Samsó Arbús, in: Arxiu de textos catalans antics 29 (2010), 355 & 367. Sessió històrico-arqueològica a Perpinyà . 2004, Barcelona, 2005, 29. USTC 351927. OCLC 892320950. Not in Adams or BM-STC Spanish.
