Significant association copy of this collection of Borges' early poetry, presented to the Argentine arts and culture magazine,Saber Vivir.Borges published a handful of poems and essays in the magazine, including "Para la noche del 24 de diciembre de 1940, en Inglaterra" in 1940 and "Vindicación del 1900" in 1945. Borges' sister, Norah, was also featured in the magazine during that time. Saber Vivirwas founded by Chilean diplomat and chef,José Eyzaguirre Herzl in 1940 and was published through 1956 in 116 issues. It was one of several small magazines of the time which were developed in parallel with Argentine programs guiding cultural consumption in the context of the advance of totalitarianism in Europe. Included were the topics of literature, gastronomy, music, architecture, visual arts, poetry, decoration, tourism, and others. Inscribed copies of this important collection from Borges are scarce. This one is quite interesting in terms of being presented to one of his lesser known Argentine publishing outlets, alongside the more familiarMartín FierroandSur. 8vo, 8x6" 181pp. Inscribed by Borges to the Buenos Aires magazine, Saber Vivir on the front endpage. Publisher's illustrated jacket over card wrappers, as issued, with yapped edges. Paper toned as usual, but professionally deacidified to stop the process. Wrappers toned, lightly soiled, and edge worn. Stamp to inside front cover else clean internally and very good
