The works of P. Virgil Maroni, which indeed exist, all: with the Bucolica, Georgica, & Aenida Commentaries of Tob. Donatus & Servius Honoratus, edited by Georg Fabricius, of Chemnitz: From a collection also by the same author, a rich index of things & words in the same memorable list. ***Scarce and complete works of Virgil, including the Bucolics, Georgics, Aeneid (including supplemental 13th book) and the Appendix Vergiliana including the Ciris, Aetna, Culex, Priapea, Catalepton, Epigrammata, Copa, Dirae. The works of Virgil are complete. This copy was bound without the 22 pages of prefatory section. RECENT PROVENANCE: From the Virgil Collection of Craig Kallendorf (1954 - 2023), who owned the largest private collection of antiquarian Virgil works (1,150 editions, not including Incunable books) in the world. Only a handful of prominent institutions like the British Library had larger collections. Eighth-nine of the books in his collection were the only known surviving copies, 71 only had one other known copy. He worked closely with Princeton University in helping to assemble, supplement and catalog its Junius Spencer Morgan Virgil collection. Craig Kallendorf was Professor of English and Classics at Texas A&M University. He was the author or editor of 27 books and more than 170 articles, book chapters, and reference work entries. ABOUT THE BOOK: Published in 1575 by Ex Officina Henricpetrina in Basel, Switzerland. Text in Latin. Virgil text is centered; in-depth commentary of multiple critics surrounding Virgil's words in italics. Bound in 18th century fine full calf: ornate spine gilt work and a morocco gilt-lettered spine label; ruled in gilt; marbled endpapers and a sewn-in silk ribbon placeholder. Small folio: 12" x 8" x 3" thick. [2] 2174 columns (1037 pages), [42] index and colophon. Embellished initials. ABOUT THE PUBLISHER: Heinrich Petri (1508-1579) and his son Sebastian Henric Petri (1546-1627) were influential early printers in Basel (Basilea). In addition to their own names, their printshop also used the Latin name Officina Henricpetrina. Basel was the seat of a Prince-Bishopric starting in the 11th century and joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1501. The city has been a commercial hub and an important cultural center since the Renaissance. CONDITION REPORT: Collated and complete minus the 22 pages of prefatory sections, including the glossary of names forgotten to history referenced by Virgil and information on the commentators whose critical analysis and commentary are in italics surrounding the centralized text of Virgil.*** Title page text and printer device woodcut have been extracted from the original title page and laid down on an original front blank. Endpapers were refreshed and some extra blanks added during rebinding. Spine is square, firm hinges and joints. Rubbed boards and edges. Corners gently bumped. Some darkened spots on the leather, hairline scratch on the spine. Surface level leather loss in multiple areas. An old cataloguing sticker at foot of top cover and a small one on the spine. Some chipping of the endpapers; in excellent shape otherwise. A few areas with marginal worming. Some grubbiness to endpapers. Signs of handling - stains, smudges, blots of ink, creasing, small margin tears, bent corners. Only a handful spots of marginalia. Marginal water dampening, sometimes extending to the text block. During the 18th century rebind, all edges were stained yellow but the stain has mostly faded away. Blank front flyleaf affixed with the ex libris sticker "from the Virgil collection of Craig W. Kallendorf." Overall, a scarce and impressively complete example of all works associated with Virgil during the 16th century with prolific notes and commentary from classical and literary scholars of the time.
