First edition of this commentary on the Rammeside Instructions of Amenemope, a papyrus acquired by Budge in Thebes in 1888 and of significant scholarly interest for its similarity to parts of the Book of Proverbs. Budge's analysis was published in the year he retired from his long career at the British Museum. Appointed keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities in 1894, Budge "worked zealously to expand the museum's collections of Egyptian and western Asiatic antiquities, display them for the benefit of the general public, and make the more significant texts and objects available to scholars in the form of printed editions and catalogues" (ODNB). His first publication on the Instructions - a short article - appeared in 1922, and he arranged for the British Museum to publish the papyrus in facsimile in 1923. The present publication was a fuller exegesis and aimed at a wider audience. During his 1888 trip, Budge also acquired the Papyrus of Ani. Octavo. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, 7 plates, illustrations in text. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. 1924 Lafeyette College ownership inscription of Egyptologist and classicist W. Edward Brown; Blackwell bookseller's ticket on front pastedown. Extremities lightly rubbed, top edge dusty; jacket flaps without price as issued, nicking and toning, short split at foot of spine: a near-fine copy in very good jacket indeed.
