DESCRIPTION: Limited edition / Centenary Edition, No. 73 of 350 copies. Large quarto 12 3/4 x 9 7/8 inches (325 x 250 mm), 419 pp. Foreword by Henry Nash Smith. Letterpress printing with Centaur type by Harold McGrath on Mohawk Letterpress paper. Illustrated with forty-nine wood engravings by Barry Moser. Full dark green morocco binding with triple gilt ruling on cover borders and gilt titling by Gray Parrot. Paste paper endpapers. Accompanied by a separate stiff linen- covered portfolio containing all of the Moser wood engravings loosely stacked. All housed in a linen-covered slipcase matching the cloth-covered portfolio. Signed by the artist in the colophon. Book is protected with an archival clear Dura Lar dust wrapper. CONDITION: Book, separate portfolio and loose wood engravings all in fine condition. Slipcase has two faint 3 mm, rust-colored spots 3mm. near front edge of rear panel, most likely due to interaction between the linen cloth and glue (see last photo), otherwise fine._____DISCUSSION: This Pennyroyal Press edition was a result of the Mark Twain Project at the Bancroft Library, University of California, in which all of Twain's drafts, notes, revisions, etc. were carefully examined and definitive editions of Mark Twain's literary works were republished. The printing was flawlessly done by Harold McGrath, one of the finest American pressmen of the twentieth century.
