xxiv, xii, 522pp. 12mo. A very unusual early 18th century American binding, as decorated gilt spines and board edges were not generally found in America before 1750 and owner's initials in gilt virtually never seen on American bindings before the Revolution. That the binding is from the period is confirmed by the initials, as David Cargill died in 1748. See Hannah French, "Full Gilt and Extra Gilt" in Bookbinding in Early America (WorcesterL 1986), pp. 122-147. Bristol B1208; ESTC W19467 Contemporary calf, covers ruled in gilt, board edges decorated with a gilt roll tool, spine with raised bands in five compartments, lettered direct in gilt in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, upper cover nearly detached, worn. Provenance: David Cargill (initials in gilt on the upper cover); Mary Cargill (signature on title); Rev. John Wright (booklabel). Housed in a cloth clamshell box
