The preferred second edition of this work, with additions to the text, and with six extra hand-coloured plates and with three new plates replacing three from the first edition. In the first state of the publisher's original cloth binding, bearing the date to the back strip tail. With sensitive archival restoration to back strip head and joint heads and tails, retaining the original endpapers.The later variant of this second edition, with frontispiece engraved by E. Duncan (rather than Alken), and with 'filly' spelt 'filley' to plate 9. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with light fraying to back strip head and to cloth at joints. Fading and light rubbing to gilt of front board. Hinges strained, but firmly held. In a signed morocco slip case, with scorch marks to back strip, most concentrated to back strip head. Head of front joint of slip case starting, with panel firmly held. Light rubbing to slip case back strip head. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece very tenderly held to the head only, and lacking tissue guard. Plates otherwise retain tissue guards. Handling marks to engraved title page, which is lightly age toned. Text leaves clean and bright, with the odd spot to plate perimeters. Neat repair to closed tear to fore edge of 'List of Plates'.
