Demonstration album of ocular-muscle "training." Optometric Educational Department, C.S.S. Co., ca. 1928. 8½ × 5½ inches. Oblong format. This rare optometric demonstration album documents the so-called "Myoculator Technique," a 1920s method of ocular myology training promoted as a cure for strabismus and related eye-muscle imbalances. Distributed by the Optometric Educational Department of the C.S.S. Company, the volume was intended for display by licensed "Myoculator Technicians," graduates of the company s post-graduate instruction in ocular-muscle therapy. Contained within are fifteen pairs of before-and-after photographic portraits, each mounted on heavy linen-backed leaves. The reverses bear typed case studies describing age, diagnosis, prescription, and length of treatment, with each case signed by a different practitioner. Represented are optometrists from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, New York, and California. Subjects range from children with congenital esotropia to adults suffering vision loss from trauma. The stark, symmetrical portraits frontal and unflinching offer a fascinating intersection of clinical photography, medical advertising, and early behavioral optometry. Condition: Very good. Pages slightly curled; introductory leaf reinforced with tape; gilt title nearly faded though the name W. Van Essen, O.D. remains visible on cover. All fifteen photographic pairs clean and intact.
