An 18th-century work in the development of modern dentistry, this is the first edition of M. Bourdetâ s Recherches et Observations sur toutes les parties de lâ Art du Dentiste, published in Paris in 1757. Bourdet was dentist to King Louis XV and one of the most influential figures in early European dental science, following closely after Pierre Fauchard. The work provides a comprehensive and systematic study of all aspects of dental practice â " from anatomy and pathology to the mechanical design of dental instruments and corrective techniques for irregular teeth. Bourdetâ s attention to dental physiology, tooth replacement, and the design of dental plates marked an important advance in the professionalization of dentistry in Enlightenment France. Illustrated with folding engraved plates, the set includes detailed depictions of early dental tools and mechanical devices â " among the earliest printed images of orthodontic apparatus. The text is arranged in clear chapters covering anatomy, dental disease, hygiene, surgery, and prosthetics, each supported by Bourdetâ s case observations and innovations. His description of â plaques pour redresser et arranger les dentsâ (plates for straightening teeth) represents one of the first recorded discussions of orthodontic correction. Condition & Binding: Contemporary full mottled calf, spines richly gilt in compartments with floral tools and red morocco labels titled Lâ Art du Dentiste and volume designations â Tome Iâ and â Tome II.â Marbled endpapers and red-stained edges. Boards rubbed with moderate wear to corners and joints; some loss to headcaps and minor cracking at hinges (not affecting structural soundness). Occasional light foxing and minor water staining to preliminaries (notably the rear of vol. II), but text and plates are generally clean and well-impressed. Overall- very good.
