A Venetian Latin edition of one of the most influential anatomical treatises of the 18th century, originally published in French as Exposition anatomique de la structure du corps humain (Paris, 1732). Authored by Jacques-BÃ nigne Winslow (1669â "1760), the Danish-born anatomist who succeeded Joseph-Guichard Duverney at the Jardin du Roi in Paris, this monumental work transformed the study of anatomy through its systematic, descriptive, and functional approach. It rejected older schematic systems in favor of detailed explanations based on careful dissection and observation, with text linking structure to physiological functionâ "an innovation that influenced medical teaching across Europe for over a century. This 1758 Venetian printing is notable for its Latin translation from the French original, designed for Continental circulation among university anatomists. It includes multiple large fold-out copperplate engravings, meticulously rendered and engraved by William II (possibly Giovanni Maria Morandi or another Venetian workshop artist of the Ballioni press), depicting detailed dissections of the head, musculature, larynx, and nervous system. The images are executed with exceptional technical precision and clarity, making this work a milestone in anatomical illustration and a key link between Vesalian and Enlightenment medical visualization. Condition & Binding: Title printed in red and black, with printerâ s large woodcut device. [10], 320 pp. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf, spine with raised bands and rich gilt floral tooling, red morocco title label reading â ANATOM.
