Archive of a Final Draft screenplay and 27 photographs from the 1960 film, copy belonging to an unknown cast or crew member with a manuscript ink annotation of an illegible signature on the top of the title page. The photographs include ten reference photographs and four on-the-set photographs, all with "Exodus" stamps for photographers Leo Fuchs, Louis Goldman, or Alexander Paal on the versos, eleven portrait photographs of director Otto Preminger and ten of the actors, and a photograph of Preminger speaking before a crowd. Laid in is type letter signed, dated "31st May, 1960," on "Exodus" letterhead from the film's publicist, Fred Hift, as reference for Israeli photographer Karl Weiss, as well as a business card for Weiss. Based on Leon Uris' 1958 novel about the founding of the State of Israel, adapted for the screen by Dalton Trumbo, one of the ten screenwriters blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Together with Stanley Kubrick's 1960 film "Sparticus," also penned by Trumbo, they effectively ended Blacklisting in the motion picture industry. Paul Newman is Ari Ben Canaan, a leader of the Jewish underground, willing to sacrifice his own life and the lives of refugees rather than be turned back to war-torn Europe, but the British finally relent and allow their sea vessel, Exodus, safe passage. Once this victory is assured, 30,000 more Jews, previously interned by the British, flood into the Holy Land. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Music. Shot on location in Israel and Cyprus. Blue titled wrappers. Title page present, dated February 11, 1960, noted as FINAL, with credits for screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and author Leon Uris. 251 leaves, with last page of text numbered 246.
