Folio, 3 volumes in 1; pp. [30]. 454; [2], 231, [1]; [2], 274, [48] index; engraved architectural title page printed in red and black by Mathaeus Merian the Elder; sectional woodcut vignette title pages for the second and third volumes; text in double column; contemporary full parchment; somewhat soiled, manuscript titling on spine considerably faded; early leaves with some toning; a very good, sound copy. Engraved armorial bookplate of Arthur Atherley (1772-1844), an English Member of Parliament, four times elected to represent Southampton as M.P. in 1806, 1812, 1831 and 1832. Complete edition of the works of Horace in an imposing folio format. "By far the best edition - under the care of Grasserus: for it is both enriched and enlarged with many ms. lucubrations of Chabot, 'so that a more ample commentary can hardly be desired by any one.' Most copious indexes of words and things conclude the volume. From the preface, we learn that Chabot had devoted sixty years of his life to these Horatian Commentaries. A copy of this valuable book is in the library at Althorp" (Dibdin). Mills College Check List 280; Riedel-Horatiana A-79; Dibdin, Greek and Latin Classics (4th ed.), II, p. 99.
