Handsomely bound in tree calf, this is a wonderful twelve volume edition of the dramatic works of William Shakespeare, from celebrated Shakespearian editor Lewis Theobald. Complete in twelve volumes, uniformly bound in full tree calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips.Lewis Theobald was a landmark figure both in the history of Shakespearean editing and in literary satire, and published his first collected edition of Shakespeare's works in 1733, an edition regarded as by far the most superior published prior to 1750.There was some tension between Theobald and Alexander Pope over whom was the better editor of Shakespeare's works, producing rival editions.Including all of Shakespeare's comedies, histories, and tragedies, and also his late plays, in addition to 'Notes, Explanatory and Critical' from Theobald. With the contemporary inscription of 'Sara' to title page heads.ESTC T138863Each volume retains the original half title. With the bookplate of Lady Tara to each front pastedown, featuring a coronet. In full tree calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strip. Lacking five spine labels, and partially lacking a further two labels. Light rubbing to gilt detailing. Rear joint of volume I, tail of rear joint of volume VI, IX head of rear joint of volume VII, and tail of front joint of volume XI strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns.
