[Chinese American] [Boston] Studio portrait of a Chinese American man in Boston, 1890s. Boston, MA: Elmer Chickering Studio, 21 West Street, ca. 1890s. Albumen photograph mounted on original studio cardstock, measuring 6.5" x 4.25", with the ornate printed verso reading "The Original Chickering Photographic Studio." A striking late 19th-century cabinet portrait of a young Chinese American man, photographed by noted Boston portraitist Elmer Chickering, one of the city s premier society photographers active from the 1880s through the early 1910s. The sitter, clean-shaven except for a carefully styled mustache, wears a dark high-collared suit typical of the professional classes of the period harboring a serious gaze. During this time, Chinese Americans were rarely portrayed with such formality and composure in mainstream studio portraiture. The image holds particular historical resonance within the context of Chinese American life in New England during the exclusion era. Following the federal Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Boston s small but significant Chinese community, centered around Harrison Avenue in the South Cove district, faced pervasive discrimination even as they formed associations, churches, and small businesses that became the foundation of the city s Chinatown. Few professional studio portraits survive of Chinese immigrants or first-generation Chinese Americans in the Northeast from this period, as restrictive immigration laws and prevailing racial attitudes often limited both visibility and representation. Chickering s studio, which photographed Boston elites, actors, and visiting dignitaries, provides an unusually egalitarian venue for such a portrait, suggesting the sitter s upward mobility and social confidence amid widespread anti-Chinese sentiment. Very minor edgewear. Overall very good condition. A rare and culturally important portrait documenting Chinese American presence and self-representation in Boston at the height of the exclusion era.
