The Knave of Hearts Saunders, Louise

1st edition, Folio size, Inscribed by Saunders at Christmas 1925. Lavishly illustrated throughout with 26 Maxfield Parrish paintings, in one of his most puckishly amusing veins, alongside his signature majestic, autumnally golden figural-landscape juxtapositions. Both pastedowns and cover have full-page illustrations as well. The illustrations, according to Parrish chronicler Coy Ludwig, printed on heavy paper, "were the highest-quality reproductions that could be had." Light foxing and scattered light smudging on the pastedowns and endpapers, the interior is very lightly browned towards the edges, one page has been lightly thumbed, and the cover illustration is lightly soiled and marked. The interior illustrations are beautifully clear and clean, however. The spine has been repaired and the book cleaned and restored by one of the country's premier book restoration experts into very presentable shape.
