A key work in the history of cardiovascular medicine, in which the English physician Richard Lower expands and refines William Harveyâ s theory of the circulation of the blood. Lower describes his groundbreaking experiments on the heart, veins, and transfusion, providing the first detailed observations of how the structure of the heart relates to its function. The work also contains Lowerâ s treatise on the movement and color of blood and the passage of chyle, marking a foundational moment in modern physiology. Illustrated with several fine large fold-out anatomical engravings depicting the heart, vessels, thoracic structures, and cranial blood flow. This copy bears the 18th-century engraved bookplate of Dominique Morand (Acadà mie Royale de Chirurgie; London & Bologna Academies), an important Parisian surgeon known for his anatomical instruction â " adding a notable and desirable historical provenance.
