SECOND EDITION of the first of The Waverley Novels published five weeks after the first edition with minor revisions and one new paragraph (volume II, p. 294), three volumes, calf spine and corners with marbled boards, engraved bookplates with on front pastedowns of all three volumes; bookplates appear to be from the Gibson clan with a swan feeding her young, three keys, six lions and two banners reading "I Perpetuate," and "Coelestes Pandite Portae," the latter meaning "Open the Gate of Heaven;" title pages & half-titles present in all three volumes; 358 pp. & 370 pp. & 371pp.; volume 3 has 1½" split on front joint, minor sporadic foxing. This is an extra-illustrated (Grangerized) edition containing 18 engravings of portraits, views and one letter, minor wear. Tipped-in volume I is a facsimile of a holograph letter (dated May 14, 1830) from Sir Walter Scott to bookseller Charles Tilt thanking him for his present of illustrations for a later edition of Waverley. The original letter identified Scott as the author of Waverley (published anonymously).
