First edition, first printing with 13 titles on p. 152 ending in picture and text by Henry James, no signature mark on p. 9, half-title present. A presentation copy signed in the year of publication by James Lane Allen on the title page and inscribed to the former owner American physician and social reformer Albert Leffingwell (1845-1916) dated 14 April, 1895. [vi], 147, [6] pp. Bound in publisher's tan cloth decoratively stamped in silver, brown and gilt. Very Good with light edge wear, soiling and foxing to covers with softened corners and small ink stain to fore edge. Hinges tender, lacking the frontispiece, first gathering shaken from binding, creasing to "My Mocking-bird" plate, and light toning to contents. The author's breakout novel and the first of the A Kentucky Cardinal series; a scarce signature. BAL459.
