FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. 4to.(32 x 25 cm.). pp.xxii+[ii, errata & list of plates]+644; vii+715+[1, errata]. Near contemporary polished calf, sides ruled with double gilt fillet, spines with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, each with complementary red and brown morocco labels, sprinkled edges. Half-titles, large folding engraved map of Persia and 22 plates. Ex libris Evelyn Philip Shirley with his engraved bookplate to front pastedowns. Upper joint of Vol.2 strengthened, some light rubbing to boards, spines a little darkened, very light occasional spotting, generally a very good set in handsome bindings. First edition of this "ouvrage importante" (Brunet), based on Malcolm's (1769-1833) three diplomatic visits to Persia. While the history it provides extends back to the earliest kings known at the time, the most valuable contribution made by this book is its detailed description of the contemporary Qajar dynasty from its outset.
