First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his biographer and bibliographer, David A. Jasen, "To David all the best from Plum, Dec. 4 1963", on the front free endpaper. The American printing of the fourth Jeeves novel preceded the UK edition by ten months. David A. Jasen (1937-2022), ragtime scholar, performer, and a leading Wodehouse authority, shared a passion for music with the prolific humourist who was also famed during his lifetime as a musical lyricist. Jasen acknowledged that only Wodehouse's close friends and family knew him as "Plum", and his personal bond with the author was immortalized when Jasen became the dedicatee of Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves (1963). Jasen 64; McIlvaine A65a. Octavo. Illustrations by Paul Galdone. Original grey boards, spine lettered and decorated in green. With dust jacket. Spine ends bumped, light surface abrasion to front pastedown; tears to jacket edges, including 2 cm loss to spine head, not affecting text, and 4 cm closed tear to head of rear panel, price-clipped: a very good copy in good jacket.
